In last weeks submission of Tool Twister, we considered some valuable key areas in reference to Motor Vehicle Service points requiring attention prior to heading of for a well earned vacation…
This week we are going to focus on a few good old “Bush Mechanic Tips/Emergency Repairs that we as Outback Travellers use here in Australia to get us out of a jam.
TIP 1: SIMPLE WAYS TO FIX A LEAKING RADATOR MILES FROM ANYWHERE!!!
Ok, So your radiator has struck a leak. Depending on where the leak is situated and the severity of the leak will determine what remedial action should be taken, and hopefully the leak is not too major.
SAFTEY FIRST!. PULL WELL OVER TO SIDE OF ROAD WHEN SAFE TO DO SO. HANDBRAKE FIRMLY APPLIED….PUT HAZARD LIGHTS ON. PLACE SAFTEY REFLECTOR TRIANGLES OUT. ALLOW CAR TO COOL RIGHT DOWN FOR AT LEAST 2 HOURS…. REMOVE CAP VERY SLOWLY AFTER THIS TIME.
If a stone or rock has punctured the radiator fin tube, simply grab the long nose pliers and squeeze the edge of the tube together. Because the tube material is made from copper or aluminium. Sandwich pressure applied by the pliers should gel both parts of the tube material together thus slowing the leak to a minimum…….Obtain some high temp silicone and squeeze into the affected area. NOTE, AREA MUST BE DRY and FREE OF WATER and OIL SO THAT SILICONE will cure. Once cured. Top radiator up with water and replace radiator cap…
THIS IS A TEMPORARY FIX ONLY., and should get you out of trouble!!
